Chapter 10The Ashen Wound
The darkness didn't end.
Rowan's shoulder screamed as she dragged Darian through the tunnel, her boots scraping over jagged stone that seemed to breathe—cold one moment, searing the next. Behind them, the frozen thunder creature's roar fractured into echoes that came from every direction at once.
Darian's weight grew heavier. His breath came in shallow gasps, and when his hand brushed her cheek, his skin burned with unnatural heat.
"Just a little further," she lied.
The tunnel opened into a cavern bathed in blue light.
Rowan froze. The walls were carved with symbols she recognized from Lyra's sanctuary—but older, deeper, as if the stone itself had grown them. A shimmering wall of what looked like frozen starlight sealed the far end of the space, pulsing with a rhythm that matched her heartbeat.
She laid Darian down near the center, where the blue glow was strongest. His eyes were half-open, glazed, but his lips moved.
"Her mother's fire," he whispered. "Burning through the ice."
"Stay with me." Rowan pressed her hand to his chest, feeling the faint flutter of his heart. The silver light flickered at her fingertips, responding to her fear.
The creature's roar echoed closer.
Rowan spun toward the entrance. The shimmering wall—could it block the creature? She reached out, her silver-glowing hand touching its surface.
The wall rippled.
Then solidified.
Ice crystallized across its surface, sealing the entrance with a crack that echoed through the chamber. The creature's roar cut off abruptly, replaced by a silence so complete it felt like a held breath.
Rowan sagged against the wall, her heart hammering. For a moment, she allowed herself to breathe.
Then the sanctuary's lights brightened.
The blue glow spread across the walls, revealing murals that had been hidden in shadow. Rowan turned slowly, taking in the story carved in stone.
The first panel showed two wolves, their forms wreathed in silver fire, their jaws locked around a single glowing chain. Below them, a pack knelt in reverence.
*The Emberbond's creation*, she realized.
The next panels told a different story. The chain fracturing. The silver fire consuming one wolf while the other fled, leaving a trail of ash. The pack scattering like leaves before a storm.
Rowan's mother. Running away.
She reached the final panel and found it blank. Smooth stone, untouched by chisel or fire. As if the story had been interrupted mid-sentence.
Darian groaned, and Rowan rushed back to his side. His skin was pale, almost gray, and the veins along his neck had begun to darken—black threads spreading like roots through his skin.
"No," she whispered. "No, you don't get to do this."
She pressed both hands to his chest, pouring her silver light into him. It flickered, unstable, responding to her panic rather than her will. Darian's body absorbed the light, but the black threads only slowed, not stopped.
She needed more power.
Rowan looked around wildly, her eyes landing on the blank panel. Desperation clawed at her chest. She had nowhere else to turn.
She pressed her palm to the stone.
Her silver light erupted from her hand, spreading across the panel in veins of cold fire. The stone absorbed it greedily, drinking the light until Rowan felt her knees weaken.
Then the panel began to change.
Lines etched themselves across its surface—not carved by any chisel, but burning from within. A map unfolded before her, glowing with the same blue light that filled the sanctuary. She saw the Wound's labyrinthine passages, the frozen fire and shifting shadows, all connected by paths that seemed to move even as she watched.
And at the center, pulsing like a heartbeat, a marker labeled in ancient script:
*Lost Fang.*
Rowan's breath caught.
But there was more. In a distant chamber, far from the marker, a silhouette stood. A woman, her form outlined in silver, her face obscured by shadow.
Rowan's mother.
Or her echo.
The woman raised a hand, as if reaching toward Rowan across the impossible distance. Her lips moved, forming words Rowan couldn't hear.
*Trust no one.*
The map began to fade.
"No, wait—" Rowan pressed harder, but the light was draining from the stone, the lines dissolving like smoke. She tried to memorize everything—the path to the Lost Fang, the chamber where her mother stood, the branching tunnels that might lead to safety.
A crack split the sanctuary's ice wall.
The frozen thunder creature's roar shattered the silence, and the wall exploded inward. Shards of ice flew past Rowan's face, slicing her cheek. The creature's form was barely visible—a shape of swirling frost and shadow, its eyes twin points of absolute cold.
It spoke.
The voice was not sound, but sensation. It crawled through Rowan's bones, settling in her chest like a splinter of ice.
*The heir of ashes returns.*
The sanctuary shook. Cracks spiderwebbed across the ceiling.
*But the price of the Fang is blood.*
Rowan grabbed Darian, hauling him toward the passage that had appeared behind the map panel. The stone was still warm from her light, and it yielded beneath her touch, opening into darkness.
She didn't look back.
The creature's laughter—if it could be called laughter—followed her into the tunnel, a sound like glaciers grinding against each other.
Rowan ran, Darian's weight dragging at her arms, the map's image burned into her memory. The Lost Fang. Her mother's silhouette. The price.
*Blood.*
She didn't know what it meant.
But she had a feeling she was about to find out.
