Chapter 16The Crypt's Mouth
Rowan dragged Darian through the city's throat.
Towers leaned at impossible angles, streets became canyons of rubble. The wind moved through empty windows like mourning. She pulled him past collapsed archways and shattered fountains, his blood leaving a trail any hunter could follow.
"Just a little farther," she gasped.
Darian didn't answer. His eyes had that glassy look again.
The bond pulsed—not hers and Darian's, but the new one, the one that tied her to Lyra. Through it she felt rage, hot and focused. Triumph. Lyra was still fighting, still buying them time.
*Why?*
The question burned, but she had no answer.
Ahead, a temple rose from the ruins, its dome half-collapsed but its walls intact. Rowan dragged Darian through the gap where the door had been, into darkness that smelled of dust and old incense.
She laid him against the altar and pressed her hand to his wound. The bleeding had slowed, but not stopped.
"No medical supplies," she whispered. "Nothing."
The bond with Lyra flared again—and this time, Rowan felt something else. *Guidance.* A pull toward the altar's base, where a loose stone sat slightly askew.
She pried it open.
Inside: bandages, dried herbs, a leather-bound journal.
Rowan worked quickly, pressing herbs against Darian's wound, binding it tight. He groaned but didn't wake. When she was done, she opened the journal.
The pages were coded. Symbols she didn't recognize, arrangements that made no sense.
"Darian." She shook him gently. "I need you."
His eyes opened, unfocused. "What?"
"The journal. It's in code. You know Ashen cipher, don't you?"
He blinked slowly. "My mother... taught me."
*His mother.* The woman whose diary had mentioned secrets about his birth. The woman who, according to the foreshadowing Rowan had felt in her bones, was tied to all of this.
Rowan held the journal in front of him. "Read what you can."
Darian's finger traced the symbols. His voice came out rasping, broken:
"*The bond requires three—the giver, the receiver, the witness. The witness seals the contract with blood. Without the witness, the bond is incomplete...*"
He paused, frowning.
"*Lyra insisted I witness. She said it was tradition. But I saw her eyes when Rowan's mother spoke the vows. I saw what she wanted.*"
Rowan's breath caught.
"*I went to Aldric that night. I told him everything. The ritual, the location, the timing. I thought I was protecting the pack. I thought...*"
Darian's voice broke.
"*I didn't know he would kill her.*"
The words hung in the dust-filled air.
Rowan stared at him. At the journal. At the truth that had just cracked open between them.
"Your mother," she said slowly, "was the spy."
Darian's face went pale. "She thought she was doing the right thing."
"She led Aldric to my mother."
"She didn't know—"
"She *wrote it down.*" Rowan's voice rose. "She knew exactly what she was doing."
The crypt beneath them groaned. Dust sifted from the ceiling.
Rowan looked at the altar. At the loose stone. At the hidden staircase behind it that Darian had pointed to before collapsing.
"The records," she said. "There's more below."
She helped him stand. He leaned heavily on her as they descended into the crypt,每一步慢得像在泥泞中跋涉.
The crypt was narrow, the walls lined with niches holding urns and bones. At the far end, a cache of scrolls and books sat stacked against the wall. But it wasn't the records that stopped Rowan cold.
It was the mural.
Painted across the entire back wall, preserved by the dry air, three figures stood in a circle of flame. Rowan's mother, her face radiant, her hands raised. Lyra, younger, fierce, her eyes locked on the woman she loved. And a third figure—a woman with Darian's jaw, his stubborn chin—watching from the shadows.
Darian's mother.
Below the mural, an inscription in Old Ashen:
*Blood of the witness binds the bond. Blood of the betrayer unmakes it.*
Rowan's hand went to the Lost Fang at her belt. The one Lyra had made her drop, the one she'd retrieved in the chaos of the hunters' attack.
*Blood of the betrayer shall unmake the bond.*
She looked at Darian. "Your mother's blood is in the bond."
He nodded slowly. "If we had her blood..."
"We could break it without killing either of us."
Hope flickered, fragile as candle flame.
Then the crypt shook.
A cascade of stone crashed down from the entrance, sealing them in. Dust filled the air, thick and suffocating. Rowan coughed, pulling Darian away from the collapse.
"We triggered something," she said.
"The wards." Darian's voice was barely a whisper. "My mother... she always set wards."
Through the bond, Rowan felt Lyra's presence sharpen. Closer now. *Much* closer.
And she was not alone.
Howls rose from the ruins above. Not feral—organized. Disciplined.
A pack.
Rowan pressed her palm against the crypt's far wall. The Emberbond flared, heat building in her chest until the stone cracked, crumbled, gave way to a narrow tunnel that sloped upward.
She dragged Darian through as the crypt collapsed behind them.
They emerged into moonlight, gasping, covered in dust.
At the city's edge, a silhouette stood against the stars.
Lyra.
And behind her, stretching into the darkness, a sea of amber eyes.
The howl rose again, and this time, Rowan felt it in her bones.
*Six days.* The curse pulsed. *Five now.*
Lyra raised her hand.
The pack moved forward.
