Chapter 7The Blizzard's Bargain

The outpost rose from the snow like a broken tooth, its walls crusted with ice and the bones of old kills hanging from the eaves. Rowan's legs screamed as she half-carried Darian through the drifts, each step sinking to her thighs. The bond flickered inside her chest like a candle drowning in oil.

"Hold," a voice snapped.

Three wolves materialized from the storm, their pelts thick with frost. They shifted with brutal efficiency, men emerging from fur with blades already drawn. The leader—a woman with a scar that bisected her lip—studied Rowan with cold calculation.

"State your business."

"We need shelter," Rowan said. "An audience with the elder."

The woman laughed. "Everyone wants an audience with the elder. What makes you worth his time?"

Darian stumbled, and Rowan caught him. His breath came in ragged gasps, blood seeping through the makeshift bandage she'd tied around his ribs. The wound from Lyra's betrayal had reopened somewhere in the storm.

"She's bleeding silver," one of the guards muttered, pointing at Darian's side. "Traitor's wound. Kill them now."

Before Rowan could move, a figure stepped out of the blizzard.

He was tall, lean, with eyes the color of old copper and a smile that didn't reach them. He moved like water—no crunch of snow beneath his boots, no whisper of cloth. He'd simply *appeared*.

"Kael," the scarred woman said, her voice dropping. "You know these two?"

"I know *her*." Kael's gaze settled on Rowan. "The hidden heir. Half the packs are hunting her. The other half are waiting to see who gets the bounty first."

Rowan's wolf stirred, weak and sluggish. "You're the one who spoke to me in the storm."

"I've been tracking you since you escaped Lyra." Kael stepped closer, close enough that she could smell the pine and blood on him. "She's not the only one who wants the Emberbond. But I'm not here to take it from you. I'm here to offer you a way out."

"Liar," Darian rasped.

Kael's smile widened. "Smart too. That's why I like you both. The elder will see you. But he'll demand a price." He turned to the guards. "Take them to the arena. Tell the elder I vouch for their blood."

The scarred woman hesitated, then nodded. "This way."

---

The arena was a circle of packed snow surrounded by torches that hissed against the falling ice. Fifty wolves watched from the shadows, their eyes gleaming with hunger. The elder sat on a throne of frozen bones, his fur-lined cloak pooling around him like a shroud.

"I am Father Oren," he said, his voice carrying the weight of decades. "Kael speaks highly of you, Rowan Ashen. But words are wind. Blood is proof."

Rowan's hands trembled from exhaustion. "We don't want a fight. We need information. A place to rest."

"Then prove you deserve it." Oren gestured, and a door of iron bars rose from the snow. "My champion will face you both. Survive, and you'll have one night's shelter and my answer to one question. Lose, and your bodies will feed the pack."

A wolf emerged from the darkness.

He was massive—easily three hundred pounds of muscle and scar tissue, his fur black as pitch, his eyes empty of anything human. He didn't shift. He didn't speak. He simply *waited*.

"The Emberbond," Rowan whispered to Darian. "I can't feel it. It's too weak."

"I know." Darian's hand found hers, cold and trembling. "We fight together. Like before."

But it wasn't like before. Before, the bond had burned hot enough to share strength, to heal wounds, to *become* more than two separate wolves. Now it was a dying ember, and Rowan felt every second of its fading.

The champion attacked.

He moved faster than anything that size should, claws raking across Darian's chest before Rowan could blink. Darian's wolf erupted from him mid-stumble, fur bristling, but he was slow. Slower than he'd ever been.

Rowan shifted, her bones screaming, her wolf emerging like a half-drowned animal. She threw herself at the champion, but he swatted her aside as if she were a pup.

The pack laughed.

Darian circled, blood streaming from a dozen shallow cuts. The champion toyed with him, landing blows that weren't quite lethal, letting him heal just enough to keep fighting.

*He's drawing it out. Making a show of it.*

Rowan's wolf snarled, but the bond was silent. She couldn't reach Darian. Couldn't share his strength or borrow his speed. They were two dying animals in a cage, and everyone knew it.

Then the champion lunged.

Not at Darian.

At *her*.

His jaws closed around her hind leg, teeth grinding bone, and Rowan screamed. The pain was white-hot, blinding, and beneath it, something *cracked*.

The Emberbond flared.

Not with warmth. With *rage*.

Rowan's wolf opened her mouth and fire poured out—not the controlled flames Lyra had wielded, but a raw, uncontrolled inferno that consumed everything in its path. The champion's fur caught first, then his flesh, then his bones. He didn't even have time to scream.

The fire exploded outward, and Rowan felt herself falling, falling, the bond draining her dry.

She hit the snow, and the world went dark.

---

She woke in a cell.

Her wrists were chained to the wall, her leg wrapped in bloody bandages. Darian lay beside her, pale as the moon, his chest barely rising.

"No," she whispered. "No, no, no."

She reached for the bond.

Nothing.

It was gone. A hollow space where warmth had been, an echo of a heartbeat that had stopped beating.

"He's not dead yet," Kael's voice came from the shadows. "But he will be soon."

Rowan's head snapped up. Kael leaned against the bars, his copper eyes unreadable.

"The elder sent word to Aldric. He'll be here by dawn. He wants to watch you both die."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because I want the same thing you do." Kael crouched, his voice dropping low. "To burn Aldric's kingdom to ash. And I know where the Lost Fang is hidden."

Rowan's heart stuttered. "You—"

"No time." Kael unlocked the chains with a practiced flick. "The elder's guards will be here in minutes. Take Darian. Follow the storm's eye west. There's a cave half a day's walk from here. The Fang is inside, but it's guarded by something even I won't face alone."

"And why should I trust you?"

Kael smiled, and for the first time, it reached his eyes. "Because I loved your mother too."

He was gone before she could respond.

Rowan dragged Darian to his feet, ignoring the fire in her leg. She stumbled through the outpost, past bodies that Kael had already dealt with, and into the blizzard.

The storm swallowed them.

She walked until her legs gave out, until the cold seeped into her bones, until Darian's weight became too heavy to bear.

She collapsed in the snow, Darian's body cradled in her arms.

"Please," she whispered, her voice breaking. "Please don't leave me."

The bond was silent.

Darian's chest was still.

And in the darkness of the storm, the voice returned—but this time, it wasn't Kael's.

It was a woman's voice, soft and familiar, rising from the ashes of the Emberbond.

*"Rowan. I'm still here. But you have to let go."*

Her mother's voice.

And the bond flickered once, twice, then went dark.
