Chapter 9The Cold Inheritance

The silver light pulsed in Rowan's palm as Lyra's wolves circled closer. Darian leaned against the cave wall, his silver eyes flickering between awareness and something else—something ancient that spoke through him in fragments.

“Your mother,” Lyra said, her voice softening almost imperceptibly. Her fingers brushed the locket at her throat, a gesture Rowan hadn't noticed before. “She never told you about me, did she?”

“She told me nothing. She left me with humans and died.”

Lyra's hand stilled on the locket. A pause—barely a heartbeat—but Rowan caught the way her jaw tightened. “She didn't die. She chose to break the Emberbond.”

“That's impossible. Breaking it—”

“Kills both wolves. Yes.” Lyra stepped closer, and her wolves parted. “Unless one of them is willing to pay a different price.”

The silver inside Rowan surged, cold and warning. *Trust no one.* Her mother's voice, or the silver's echo?

“What price?”

Lyra's smile didn't reach her eyes. “Your mother gave up her wolf. Bound it to the bond's destruction so the Ashen Pack could fall without her. She walked away human, broken, carrying you.”

*Human.*

Rowan's chest tightened. “She raised me human because she *chose* to be human?”

“She chose to survive. To hide you.” Lyra's voice cracked on the last word—barely audible, but there. Her fingers trembled against the locket before she stilled them. “I loved her, Rowan. And she chose a dead bond over me.”

The revelation hung in the damp air. Rowan saw it now—the way Lyra's eyes never quite met the locket, the anger that simmered beneath her calm. Not ambition. Grief.

“You want the throne,” Rowan said slowly, “because you think it was hers.”

“It *was* hers. She threw it away for you.” Lyra's mask cracked, raw pain bleeding through. “I spent ten years rebuilding what she destroyed. I earned that throne.”

“Then take it. Why do you need me?”

“Because the packs won't follow a beta who loved the traitor queen.” Lyra's voice hardened. “But they'll follow her daughter. The hidden heir who survived. You're my claim, Rowan. My proof that the Ashen bloodline endorses me.”

Darian stirred, his silver eyes flaring bright. “She lies.” The dual voice echoed off the stone—one his, one deeper, colder. “The cold fire burns in her too. She wants the silver.”

Lyra's eyes snapped to him. “What does he know?”

“He knows you're not telling me everything.” Rowan stepped between them, silver flaring brighter. “The silver inheritance. What is it really?”

Lyra's laugh was bitter. “It's the scar your mother left on the world when she broke the bond. The Emberbond doesn't die—it fractures. And those fractures become... tools. Weapons. Your mother's broken bond seeded silver in her bloodline. In you.”

“And in you?”

Lyra's smile turned sharp. “She was my mate before she was your mother. Her scars became mine.”

The wolves growled, closing in. Rowan felt the silver pulse with warning, felt Darian's weight sag against her shoulder.

“Join me,” Lyra said, her voice almost gentle. “Let me put you on the throne as a figurehead. I'll rule, but you'll have safety, purpose—a family.”

“And if I refuse?”

“Then I take the silver from your corpse.” Lyra's gentleness vanished. “The throne is mine. With or without your consent.”

The wolves lunged.

Rowan moved on instinct—silver erupting from her palms in a blinding wave. The blast caught three wolves mid-leap, throwing them against the cave walls. Stone cracked. Dust rained down.

“Darian—the tunnel!”

He grabbed her hand, and they ran.

Behind them, Lyra's scream echoed: “DON'T LET THEM ESCAPE!”

The cave split—left into darkness, right into a narrow passage where Rowan felt a faint current of air, cool and carrying the scent of moss. *Water. Escape.* She pulled Darian right.

“How do you know?” he gasped.

“I don't. But she won't expect it.”

The passage narrowed until they crawled on hands and knees, stones scraping their backs. Behind them, howls and the thunder of pursuit.

Darian's silver eyes flickered. “She's not wrong about one thing. The cold fire has been lit.”

“What does that mean?”

“Your mother's bond break woke something. The elders called it the Ashen Wound—a crack in the world where old magic bleeds through.” His voice shifted, the deeper tone surfacing. “And it's hungry.”

The ground trembled. A low rumble, growing.

Rowan scrambled into a wider cavern, dragging Darian with her. The shaking intensified. From the tunnel behind them came a sound like ice cracking, like fire freezing.

“What is that?”

Darian's face was pale, his silver eyes dimming. “The cold fire. It followed the silver.”

He collapsed.

Rowan caught him, felt his heartbeat falter. The shaking grew—the creature, whatever it was, was coming.

She looked around wildly. A narrow crevice in the far wall. Maybe big enough.

“Stay with me,” she whispered, hauling him toward it.

The ground split behind them.

Rowan forced Darian through the crevice, sliding after him as stone shattered and a roar like frozen thunder filled the cavern.

They fell into darkness.

And the shaking did not stop.
