Oath of the Heart

Chapter 2The Broken Chain

The Rusty Nail sat wedged between a tannery and a bone-carver's shop, its wooden sign swinging on a single rusted chain. Cinder ducked through the doorway, Sera close behind, and the tavern's warmth hit him like a wall—smoke, spilled ale, and the sour tang of too many bodies packed too close.

He scanned the room. Farmers, off-duty guards, a few merchants nursing cups they clearly couldn't afford. The patrons barely glanced at them. Good. The stolen cloak hung heavy on Cinder's shoulders, the hood pulled low.

A man in the corner booth raised his hand—a nervous gesture, too quick, like he regretted it the moment he made it.

Garrick.

He was thin, with the kind of face that looked perpetually worried. A scar ran from his temple to his jaw, clean and white, years old. He drummed his fingers on the table as Cinder and Sera slid into the booth across from him.

"You came." Garrick's voice cracked. He swallowed. "I wasn't sure you would."

"You said my father's alive." Cinder kept his voice low. "Prove it."

Garrick reached inside his coat. Sera tensed, her hand moving to her belt, but he only produced a folded piece of paper—yellowed, worn at the edges. He slid it across the table.

Cinder unfolded it. His breath caught.

It was his father's handwriting. The same uneven letters he'd seen on a thousand blacksmith orders, the same way the 'g' slanted too far left.

*Son. I'm alive. Don't trust anyone. The system is not what you think. Find the Temple of the Broken Chain. North road. They'll explain.*

Below it, a symbol: a chain split in two.

"How did you—"

The tavern door slammed open.

Six guards poured in, their boots heavy on the wooden floor. At their head strode a woman in silver-blue armor, her eyes glowing with the unmistakable light of an active Oath skill. A Truthseeker.

She scanned the room. Her gaze stopped on their booth.

"Everyone stay seated," she announced. "By order of the Thornwall Council, I will be asking questions. You will answer truthfully. Resistance will be noted."

Her skill pulsed—a wave of pressure that pressed against Cinder's skull, demanding compliance.

Garrick's face went white. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I didn't—they followed me—"

The Truthseeker's eyes locked onto him. "You there. State your name."

Garrick opened his mouth. His Oath mark on his neck flared bright.

"Garrick of the—" His voice hitched. Something fought him. "Garrick of the True Order."

The words tore out of him like a confession.

The tavern went silent.

The Truthseeker's hand moved to her sword. "Seize him."

A figure rose from a nearby table—not a guard, just a man in an apron, a cook's cleaver in his hand. He moved too fast. Before anyone could react, he drove the blade into Garrick's chest.

Garrick gasped. Blood bloomed across his shirt.

"Spy," the cook said, and vanished through the kitchen door.

Chaos erupted. Patrons screamed. Guards drew weapons. The Truthseeker's skill flickered as she turned to command her men.

Cinder's system screamed.

**[System Instability: Critical]**

**[Heartstone Fragment: Resonance Detected]**

The words blurred. Heat surged through his chest. He didn't think—he just *pushed.*

A pulse of energy exploded outward, invisible but tangible. Every Oath mark in the room flickered. The guards stumbled. The Truthseeker's glow died. For one heartbeat, the whole tavern went quiet—no skills, no enforced truths, just people gasping in the sudden absence of the system's weight.

Garrick grabbed Cinder's arm. Blood stained his fingers.

"Temple," he rasped. "Broken Chain. North road. Your father—" He coughed. "—waits."

His grip went slack.

Cinder didn't wait. He grabbed Sera's hand and pulled her toward the kitchen, shoving through the crowd. Behind them, the Truthseeker shouted orders, her voice sharp with fury.

They burst through the kitchen door. Grease and steam hit them. The cook-spy was already gone, the back door swinging open.

But a trapdoor lay beneath a fallen shelf—metal rings set into the floor.

Sera saw it first. "There."

They hauled the shelf aside. Cinder wrenched the trapdoor open. A dark shaft descended into wet stone.

Below, the sewers waited.

They dropped down together, landing in ankle-deep water. Cinder slammed the trapdoor shut above them. The sound echoed down the tunnel, swallowed by darkness.

For a moment, they just breathed.

Then Cinder's system flickered again.

**[New Skill Unlocked: Oathbreak (Incomplete)]**

**[Warning: Prolonged use may cause permanent system damage]**

**[Entity proximity: Detected]**

The last line made him freeze.

"You okay?" Sera's hand touched his arm.

"I saw something." His voice sounded strange even to him. "When I used the skill. I saw my father. He was tied to a chair. He said—" Cinder paused, the vision sharp in his mind. "He said the Heart's Echo is the key to the prison."

Sera's face went pale.

"And then something else spoke." Cinder's throat tightened. "It said I'm the warden now."

Before she could respond, a sound echoed through the sewer tunnel. Footsteps. Slow. Deliberate.

A figure emerged from the darkness.

Kael.

Voss's second-in-command. Same cold eyes. Same scarred hands resting on his sword hilt. But he wasn't alone. His other hand held a blade to the throat of a young girl—maybe twelve years old, dark hair, terrified eyes.

Eyes that looked exactly like Sera's.

"Hello, Cinder." Kael's voice was calm, almost pleasant. "I have a proposal."

The girl trembled. A thin line of blood traced down her cheek.

Cinder's system screamed again:

**[Entity proximity: Critical]**

**[The prison remembers you]**

Kael smiled.

"Surrender, and she lives. Refuse, and I'll show you exactly what happens to people who break their oaths."

The girl made a small sound—a whimper that cut straight through Cinder's chest.

Sera stared at the child. Her hand shook.

"Kael." Her voice was barely a whisper. "That's not possible."

"Oh?" Kael tilted his head. "Are you sure?"

The sewer water rippled. Something dark moved in the shadows behind him.

Cinder's HUD flickered one last warning before dying entirely:

**[The Heart's Echo quest cannot be abandoned]**

**[You are the warden now]**

**[Do not fail]**
