Oathbreaker's Echo
Chapter 2The Core Fragment
The stronghold's corridors swallowed Vex whole—stone walls lined with Oath-lanterns that pulsed in rhythm with the guards' heartbeats. Every step echoed. Every shadow held watching eyes.
Two Inquisitors flanked him, their hands resting on Oath-forged blades. They didn't speak. They didn't need to. The brand on his neck told them everything.
*Traitor. Oathbreaker. Scarred.*
Vex kept his breathing even. The shard in his pocket hummed against his thigh, a constant vibration that seemed to grow stronger the deeper they went.
**[System Notification: Anomalous Object Detected]**
**[Unknown Resonance: 12% and rising]**
**[Mental Fortitude: 73%]**
He pushed the notification aside. Not now.
The guards stopped at an iron door, its surface etched with Oath-seals that glowed faintly blue. One of them pressed his palm to the center. The seals parted with a hiss.
"Five minutes," the guard said. "Then we return."
The cell beyond was smaller than Vex remembered. Colder. A single Oath-lantern hung from the ceiling, casting a sickly green light that made the scars on Orin's face look like fresh wounds.
Master Orin sat on the floor, wrists bound in Oath-chains that anchored him to the wall. His eyes found Vex immediately—and there was no surprise in them.
"I wondered when she'd send you," Orin said. His voice was dry, cracked. "Took you longer than I expected."
Vex stepped inside. The door slammed shut behind him. He heard the seals re-engage.
**[Oath Seal Detected: Level 4 Restraint]**
**[Suggested Course: Do not attempt to break]**
"I'm not here to kill you."
"No?" Orin's lips twisted into something that wasn't quite a smile. "Then why are you here, Vex? To reminisce? To ask for forgiveness?" He rattled his chains. "You broke your Oath. You let your sister die. And now you walk into the lion's den wearing Cora's leash."
The words hit like a blade to the chest. Vex's scar throbbed.
"I'm trying to warn you."
"Warn me?" Orin laughed—a hollow, bitter sound. "The execution is a trap, boy. It always was. Cora doesn't want me dead. She wants *you* caught in the act of betrayal so she can claim your head with the Council's blessing."
Vex's hand moved to his pocket. The shard pulsed, hotter now.
**[Resonance: 27%]**
**[Oath Fragment Detected nearby]**
"I know." He pulled out the shard. Black metal, jagged edges, veins of silver running through it like frozen lightning. "But she doesn't know I have this."
Orin's chains rattled as he leaned forward. His eyes locked onto the shard, and for the first time, something shifted in his expression—recognition. Fear.
"Where did you find that?"
"Hideout. Buried beneath the foundation." Vex held it up. The Oath-lantern's light seemed to bend around it, drawn into the metal. "What is it?"
Orin stared for a long moment. When he spoke, his voice was barely a whisper.
"A piece of the original System core."
The words hung in the air like a death sentence.
**[System Notification: Warning]**
**[Information Received: Core Fragment]**
**[Mental Fortitude: 68%]**
"That's impossible," Vex said. "The core was destroyed when the System was created."
"There are pieces that survived." Orin's chains scraped the stone floor as he shifted. "I've spent years searching for them. They're the only things that can rewrite an Oath—truly rewrite it, not just modify it. They're why the Covenant keeps me alive instead of executing me outright. They think I know where others are hidden."
Vex looked at the shard in his palm. It hummed, vibrating against his skin, and he felt that presence again—that whisper in another room. Familiar. Pained.
"It feels..." He struggled for the word. "Alive."
"It's resonating with something you carry. Something bound to an Oath fragment." Orin's eyes narrowed. "What did you break, Vex? What Oath did you shatter when you left the Covenant?"
The question hit harder than it should have. Vex's scar burned.
"I broke the Oath to my sister. To protect her."
"And she died anyway."
"Yes."
Orin was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Her Oath fragment is still bound to the System. It's searching for you, even now. The shard is responding to it."
Vex's blood went cold.
**[Mental Fortitude: 62%]**
**[Shard Resonance: 34%]**
"Cora's being controlled by something she calls 'the Voice,'" Vex said, forcing the words out. "She's not acting like herself. She's... colder. More ruthless. It's like something's driving her."
Orin's chains creaked as he leaned back, his face unreadable.
"The Voice is likely your sister's Oath fragment—twisted and corrupted by the System, given a will of its own. It's using Cora to find the shard. To find you."
The room seemed to spin. Vex gripped the shard tighter, feeling its heat against his palm.
"Why? What does it want?"
"For you to finish what you started." Orin's voice was soft, almost gentle. "To complete the Oath you broke. To bring your sister's soul peace."
**[Mental Fortitude: 55%]**
**[Emotional Shock: Severe]**
Footsteps echoed in the corridor outside. Heavy. Measured.
Vex shoved the shard back into his pocket. "We don't have much time. I need your help to rescue Sera."
"Sera?" Orin's eyes sharpened. "The Oathsmith apprentice?"
"She's being held by Cora. If I don't kill you, Cora will bind her with a slave Oath."
Orin studied him for a long moment. Then, slowly, he nodded.
"There's a hidden Oathsmith in the stronghold's lower levels. He can use the shard to modify Oaths—break Cora's control, free Sera. But there's a cost."
"What cost?"
"To use the shard, someone must sacrifice their own Oath. The process leaves them scarred. Vulnerable." Orin's gaze met his. "It must be someone with a pure Oath. Someone unbound."
Vex's mind went to Sera. She had no Oath yet. She was clean.
"No," he said. "I'll do it."
"Your Oath is broken, Vex. You're already scarred. The shard would reject you."
The footsteps grew louder. A voice echoed through the stronghold, amplified by an Oath-amplifier:
*"I know you're here, Vex. Bring me the shard, or Sera dies in five minutes."*
Cora's voice. She was listening.
**[Time Limit: 4:58]**
**[Objective: Rescue Sera before execution]**
Vex's blood turned to ice.
"She heard everything," he whispered.
Orin's chains rattled as he stood, his face grim. "She's been listening since you walked in. The Oath-seals on the door are amplifiers too."
Vex's hand went to the shard. It pulsed, hot and insistent, and that whisper grew louder—a voice he almost recognized.
*Come find me.*
He looked at Orin. "I'm going alone."
"Vex—"
"If I don't, she dies. You stay. Prepare the Oathsmith."
Orin's jaw tightened, but he nodded. "The passage behind the loose stone in the northeast corner leads to the lower levels. The Oathsmith's workshop is hidden behind the third torch on the left."
Vex turned toward the door.
"Vex," Orin called. "The Voice is your sister. She's not evil. She's trapped, bound to the System, desperate to be free. Don't kill her."
Vex didn't answer.
He opened the door and stepped into the corridor.

**[Sera's Status: Alive]**

The shard burned against his thigh.
And somewhere in the stronghold, Cora waited.
