Oathbreaker's Echo

Chapter 3The Oathsmith's Remains

The lower levels smelled of damp stone and old blood.

Vex pressed himself against the wall as footsteps echoed from the corridor ahead. Two Covenant guards, their Oath-marks glowing faintly in the darkness, passed within three feet of his hiding spot. The shard pulsed against his thigh—sixty percent now, the vibration traveling up his spine like a second heartbeat.

He counted their steps. Twenty. Thirty. Forty.

They stopped.

"What was that?" one of them asked.

Vex's hand moved to his dagger. The shard hummed louder, and he pressed his palm against it, willing it to still. It didn't listen.

"Probably a rat," the other guard said. "Keep moving. The Inquisitor wants every exit sealed."

Their footsteps resumed, fading into the distance. Vex exhaled and continued down the corridor, counting torches. Third one on the left. He found it—a rusted bracket, the torch burned down to a stub. He twisted it.

Nothing happened.

He tried again, harder. Still nothing. The shard's resonance climbed to sixty-three percent, and he felt a tremor run through the stone beneath his feet. Orin had warned him about the resonance. It was drawing attention, painting a target on his back.

The torch bracket finally gave way with a grinding sound. A section of the wall slid inward, revealing a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

Vex didn't hesitate.

The staircase wound deeper than he expected. The air grew colder, and the shard's light cast twisted shadows on the walls. At the bottom, a heavy iron door stood ajar, and the smell of blood hit him before he saw the body.

The Oathsmith lay on the floor of a workshop that had been torn apart. Tools scattered across the stone. Shelves overturned. A precise Oath-seal strike had carved through his chest, the edges of the wound still smoking.

Vex crouched beside him, checking for a pulse he knew he wouldn't find.

Dead. Hours ago.

The Voice had gotten here first. Through Cora, through whoever else it controlled. It knew about the Oathsmith. It knew about the shard. And it knew Vex would come here.

He searched the workshop, his movements fast and desperate. Papers littered the floor—notes on Oath structures, diagrams of binding patterns, a half-finished letter to someone named Elara. None of it useful.

Then he found the journal.

It lay beneath the Oathsmith's body, partially burned. Vex pulled it free and flipped through the charred pages. Most of it was illegible, but one fragment remained intact near the back:

*"To wield the shard alone, one must break their Oath completely—no half-measures. The price is absolute. The System will mark you as broken, and no Oath will ever bind to you again. You will be a void in the Oathweb, hunted by every faction, tolerated by none."*

Below it, a single line in different handwriting:

*"But it can be done."*

Vex stared at the words.

Break his Oath completely. He'd already broken it once, when he'd betrayed the Covenant to save his sister. The scar on his chest still ached from that failure. But that had been a partial break—enough to mark him, enough to cost him stats, enough to make him a pariah.

This would be different.

This would make him a non-entity. A ghost in the System. No faction would accept him. No Oath would protect him. He would be completely alone.

The shard's resonance hit sixty-eight percent.

Sera had three minutes left.

He made his choice.

Vex gripped the shard, feeling its edges bite into his palm. He reached for the broken Oath inside him, the scar that pulsed with the memory of his sister's death, and prepared to sever it entirely.

The workshop door slammed open.

Cora stood in the doorway, dragging Sera by a chain attached to a collar around her neck. Sera's Oath mark glowed bright red—the color of a slave bond fully activated. Her eyes were wet, but she didn't speak.

"Don't," Cora said, her voice layered with something else, something that made the air feel heavy. "You activate that shard, and I trigger her Oath. She'll be dead before the pulse leaves your hand."

Vex's grip on the shard tightened. "Let her go, Cora."

"She's leverage. You know how this works." Cora stepped into the workshop, dragging Sera with her. Her eyes flickered—one moment brown, the next moment gleaming with a pale blue light that wasn't hers. "The Voice wants the shard. Give it to me, and Sera lives."

"I've heard that promise before."

"You've never had a choice before."

The shard's resonance climbed to seventy-two percent. Vex felt it pulling at his scar, hungry for the break he'd almost made. Sera's Oath mark pulsed in rhythm with it.

And then he saw it.

The shard's glow reflected in Sera's eyes. Not fear. Not defeat.

Understanding.

She gave him a tiny nod.

Vex didn't think. He acted.

He drove the shard into the floor, channeling his broken Oath into it like a lightning rod. The resonance spiked—seventy-five, eighty, eighty-five percent—and a pulse of silver energy exploded outward.

Cora screamed.

Sera's Oath mark flickered.

And in the space between heartbeats, the Voice manifested.

It rose from the shard like smoke taking form—a woman's silhouette, translucent and shimmering, her face half-familiar. Vex's breath caught in his throat.

His sister.

Lira.

She looked at him with eyes that held both love and agony, and her voice came out like wind through a cracked bell.

"Vex... help me... I'm trapped."

The pulse faded. Cora staggered, recovering, her eyes blazing with stolen light. She grabbed Sera's chain and yanked her close.

"You just gave me what I needed."

Vex tried to move, but his body felt heavy. The shard's resonance held steady at eighty-five percent, thrumming in his bones.

"Now the shard is bound to you," Cora said, her smile wrong, her voice layered with the Voice's echo. "And through you, to her."

She gestured.

Sera's Oath mark flared bright red.

And Vex felt a tug at his chest—his scar, pulling toward Sera, linking them in a way he couldn't understand.

Cora's laugh was cold. "Every choice you make from now on will echo through her. Every Oath you break will cut her. Every wound you take will be hers to share."

Vex's hand went to his scar.

It was still warm.

But now it pulsed in rhythm with Sera's Oath mark.
