Severed Ties

Chapter 12Ashes of Alliance

The safe house smelled of stale coffee and dust. Vera sat on the edge of a cracked leather sofa, watching the sunrise paint the grimy windows in shades of amber and rose. Morgan slept on the pullout bed, her face too pale, her breathing too shallow.

Vera hadn't slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Marcus's smile.

*Wait until you lose her too.*

Morgan stirred, wincing as she sat up. Her hand went to her temple, pressing hard.

“Another headache?” Vera asked.

“They're worse in the morning.” Morgan's voice was raw. “The tumor's growing.”

Vera's chest tightened. “We need to get you to a hospital. There are treatments, clinical trials—”

“I've done them all.” Morgan swung her legs over the edge of the bed. “Surgery, radiation, immunotherapy. Nothing worked. The doctors gave me six months. That was four months ago.”

Vera's hands trembled. She pressed them flat against her thighs. “How long have you known?”

“Since before we met.” Morgan met her eyes. “That's why I approached you at the gala. Not just to protect Julian. I recognized you from the investigation I'd done on The Unraveler. I knew exactly who you were.”

The confession hit like a slap.

“You knew,” Vera repeated.

“I hired a private investigator after my sister-in-law's engagement fell apart. He traced the manipulation back to you.” Morgan's voice was steady, but her fingers twisted the sheet. “I was going to expose you. Ruin you the way you ruined Julian.”

“Then why didn't you?”

“Because I watched you at the gala. You looked as hollow as I felt.” Morgan's laugh was bitter. “I wanted to understand someone who had nothing left to lose. Someone like me.”

Vera's throat burned. “You used me.”

“We used each other.” Morgan stood, crossing to Vera. She knelt, taking Vera's cold hands. “But somewhere in all the lies, I found something real. I'm not sorry for that. Are you?”

Vera wanted to say yes. She wanted to scream that this was a mistake, that she was a monster who destroyed everything she touched. But Morgan's fingers were warm, and her eyes held no judgment.

“No,” Vera whispered. “I'm not sorry either.”

Morgan smiled, fragile and fierce. “Then let's go see my brother. It's time he heard the truth.”

---

Julian's penthouse gleamed with cold perfection. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the Manhattan skyline, and every surface reflected light like a blade.

Julian stood by the bar, a glass of whiskey in his hand. He didn't turn when they entered.

“The doorman called up. Said you looked desperate.” His voice was ice. “I almost told him to turn you away.”

“Julian, please.” Morgan stepped forward. “There are things you need to know.”

“Such as?” He turned, and Vera saw the fury in his eyes. “That your girlfriend is The Unraveler? That she destroyed my engagement to settle a grudge against a dead woman?”

Vera's blood went cold. “How did you—”

“I hired a private investigator the day Morgan moved out.” Julian pulled out his phone, tapped the screen. A recording filled the room—Vera's voice, tinny and distorted.

*“—I was hired to break up Julian Hartley's engagement. The client wanted revenge. I used psychological manipulation, staged incidents, created doubt. The fiancée ended things. It was clean.”*

The recording stopped.

Vera felt the floor drop beneath her feet.

Julian's smile was razor-thin. “I've had this for weeks. I was deciding what to do with it. Then Marcus showed up, and everything got interesting.”

“Marcus was hired by a business rival,” Vera said, forcing her voice steady. “Not Elena. There's a larger conspiracy here, Julian. Someone wants to destroy your family.”

“I know.” Julian set down his glass. “I've known for months. Marcus works for Gregory Chen, my largest competitor. Chen's been trying to destabilize Hartley Industries for years. He used Elena to hire you, used you to set the chain in motion.” His gaze cut to Morgan. “And you. My own sister. You knew Vera was a saboteur, and you kept her close. You chose her over our family.”

“I chose the truth,” Morgan said.

“You chose her.” Julian's voice cracked. “She manipulated your fiancée, Morgan. She destroyed my relationship. And you helped her.”

“Elena manipulated everyone,” Vera said. “I was a pawn, just like you.”

“You're still a pawn.” Julian walked toward them, stopping inches from Vera. “You think you're fighting for something noble? You're a weapon Chen aimed at my family, and you did exactly what he wanted.” His eyes were wet. “My sister is dying, and you've spent her last months lying to her.”

Morgan stepped between them. “Julian, stop.”

“No.” Julian's voice broke. “You're dead to me, Morgan. I don't have a sister anymore.”

The words hung in the air like smoke.

Morgan's face went white. “You don't mean that.”

“I've never meant anything more.” Julian turned away, his shoulders rigid. “Get out of my penthouse. Both of you. If I see either of you again, I'll release that recording to every news outlet in the city.”

Vera grabbed Morgan's hand. She was trembling, tears streaming down her face.

“Come on,” Vera whispered. “Let's go.”

They made it to the elevator before Morgan collapsed against the wall, sobbing. Vera held her, feeling the fragile bones beneath her skin, the warmth of a body that was already fading.

“I have no one,” Morgan gasped. “He was all I had left.”

“You have me.” Vera's voice was hoarse. “I know that's not enough. But you have me.”

Morgan's phone buzzed.

A photo filled the screen—the safe house, taken from across the street. The morning light glinted off the window where Vera had sat watching the sunrise.

A message followed.

*Tick tock.*

Vera's heart stopped.

Marcus knew where they were. He'd been watching all night.

“We need to move,” Vera said, pulling Morgan into the elevator. “Now.”

The doors closed, and the penthouse disappeared behind them.

But the photo stayed burned into Vera's mind—a reminder that she had nowhere left to run, no allies left to call, and a stalker who knew exactly where to find the woman she loved.
