Severed Ties

Chapter 14The Breaking Point

The car engine cut at 11:47. Vera killed the headlights and let the pier's shadow swallow them whole.

Morgan's hand found hers in the dark. “You're shaking.”

“I'm thinking.”

“Those aren't the same thing.”

Vera stared through the rain-streaked windshield at the abandoned warehouse where Reeves's car sat alone. Too alone. Marcus wouldn't walk into an ambush without insurance. Neither would she.

“I'm changing the plan.”

Morgan's grip tightened. “We talked about this.”

“We talked about surviving Marcus.” Vera turned to face her. “I don't want to survive. I want to burn it all down. Elena. The lies. What happened to my sister.”

“And yourself?”

The question hung in the air, sharp as broken glass.

“If that's what it takes.”

Morgan's jaw tightened. She looked at the warehouse, then back at Vera. Something shifted in her eyes—not agreement, but acceptance. “Then we do it together.”

Vera's phone buzzed. *Marcus: You're late.*

She typed back: *Change of venue. Press conference. 2 PM. The Solaire Hotel.*

She dropped the phone in her bag before he could respond.

---

The hotel room smelled like bleach and desperation.

Vera dialed Cassie—the journalist who'd been sniffing around The Unraveler for months. The one Morgan had warned her about. The one whose story could ruin her.

“You have thirty seconds,” Cassie answered.

“I'm giving you the story. The Unraveler. The Hartley connection. Elena Vance. All of it.”

Silence. Then: “Why?”

“Because I want the truth to come out.”

“You want revenge.” Cassie's voice was flat. Professional. “I don't do revenge pieces.”

“Then do justice.” Vera pressed her palm flat against the cold hotel desk. “I have recordings. Documents. Proof that Elena manipulated my sister into a situation that got her killed. I also have proof that I'm The Unraveler.”

Another pause. Longer this time.

“You're giving me yourself?”

“I'm giving you the whole story. The real one. Not the version Elena wants told.”

“Two hours,” Cassie said. “The Solaire press room. If you don't show, I run what I have anyway.”

The line went dead.

Morgan was watching from the bed, arms crossed, face unreadable. “She'll destroy you.”

“I know.”

“And you're okay with that?”

Vera thought about her sister's face. The last time she'd seen it—pale, hollow-eyed, mouth set in a line that said *I've already given up*.

“I've been destroying myself for years,” Vera said. “At least this way, it means something.”

---

The press room was packed.

Cameras. Microphones. Faces hungry for blood. Cassie stood at the back, arms crossed, watching like a hawk.

Vera stepped to the podium. Morgan stood beside her, close enough to touch.

“My name is Vera Chen,” she said. “And for the past three years, I've operated an underground service called The Unraveler. I destroyed relationships for money. I ruined lives.”

A ripple through the crowd. Flashbulbs.

“I did it because I was angry. Because I blamed Julian Hartley's family for my sister's death. But I was wrong.”

She pulled out the folder—the one with every piece of evidence she'd collected. Elena's emails. The financial records. The phone calls.

“Elena Vance manipulated my sister. She fed her lies. Set her up. And when my sister was broken, Elena walked away clean.”

The room erupted. Questions shouted over each other. Vera held up the folder.

“It's all here. Every transaction. Every lie. Every call she made to frame Julian's family.”

Then the back door opened.

Elena walked in.

She looked perfect. Tailored suit. Hair pinned back. Smile that could cut glass.

“Ms. Chen,” she said, voice carrying across the room. “I was hoping you'd do something this dramatic.”

The cameras swung toward her.

Elena pulled out her phone. “I have evidence that Vera Chen's sister was not an innocent victim. She was my partner. She knew exactly what she was doing when she helped me set up Julian.”

Vera's blood went cold.

“And Vera?” Elena's smile widened. “She's the one who pushed her sister over the edge. By ruining Richard Cole's marriage. By setting off the chain reaction that got Marcus's brother killed. Your sister died because of *you*, Vera.”

The room went silent.

Vera felt Morgan's hand on her arm. Steadying. Grounding.

“That's not true,” Vera said. But her voice cracked.

“It is.” Elena held up her phone. “I have recordings. Confessions. Your sister's own words.”

The cameras swung back to Vera.

She could run. Disappear. Start over somewhere Elena couldn't reach.

But running was what got her sister killed.

“She's right,” Vera said.

Morgan's grip tightened.

“My sister wasn't innocent. She made choices. Bad ones. And I made choices that made everything worse.” Vera looked directly into the nearest camera. “I am The Unraveler. I ruined Richard Cole's marriage. And I set the chain of events that led to my sister's death.”

Flashbulbs exploded.

“But Elena Vance orchestrated it. She used my sister, used me, used everyone. And she's been doing it for years.”

Elena's smile faltered—just for a second.

“You want to destroy me?” Vera said. “Fine. But I'm taking you with me.”

---

The chaos swallowed them.

Vera grabbed Morgan's hand and pulled her toward the back exit. Shouts followed them. Questions. Accusations. The sound of a career crumbling.

They burst out into the alley. Rain hit Vera's face, cold and sharp.

“You did it,” Morgan said, breathless. “You actually did it.”

“I destroyed myself.”

“You freed yourself.”

Vera's phone buzzed.

She looked down.

Unknown number: *You think you're free? I'm just getting started.*

A chill ran down her spine.

“Who is it?” Morgan asked.

Vera showed her the screen.

Morgan's face went pale. “We need to move.”

They ran. But Vera knew—this wasn't over.

It was just beginning.
