The Broken Oath
Chapter 6The Dead End
The warehouse air tasted of rust and diesel. Lena's fingers flew across the keyboard, but the drive refused her commands.
"It needs a biometric key," she whispered.
"His fingerprint? Retina?" Darius had his gun trained on the distant door where the hunter's footsteps echoed.
"Something I don't have."
She stared at the photo of Ethan—young, earnest, with his father's sharp jaw but softer eyes. The case. She'd barely looked at it.
Lena flipped the metal case over. A faint seam ran along the bottom edge. She slid her nail into it and pried. A thin microdot fell into her palm.
"Phone," she breathed.
Darius handed her his without looking. She positioned the microdot under the camera lens, and the screen flashed: *Retinal scan confirmed. Access granted.*
The drive began decrypting.
A gunshot cracked. Concrete sprayed near her shoulder.
"Move!" Darius grabbed her arm, dragging her behind a rusted conveyor belt. The hunter was advancing, weapon raised.
They ran deeper into the warehouse. Pipes clanged overhead. The decryption bar on her laptop crept forward—23%.
"There." Darius pointed to a steel door with a heavy chain wrapped through the handles. He raised his gun and fired. Sparks flew. The chain held.
"More ammo?"
"Empty."
Lena spotted a crowbar leaning against a crate. She grabbed it, wedged the curved end into a link, and pulled. The metal groaned. Her palms burned. The hunter's footsteps grew closer.
*45%.*
The link snapped. She yanked the chain free just as a bullet tore through the crates beside her. Darius kicked the door open, pulling her through into an alley.
Cold air hit her face. A motorcycle sat against the wall, keys dangling from the ignition.
"Donor," Darius said, swinging his leg over.
She jumped on behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist. The engine roared to life.
Then Marcus's voice echoed from the alley's entrance: "End of the line."
A white van blocked their exit. Two armed men stepped out. Behind them, the hunter emerged from the warehouse.
Marcus Webb walked forward, hands in his pockets, as if he'd come for a casual stroll. "Darius. Get off the bike."
Darius's body went rigid. Lena felt the conflict in his muscles—the old loyalty warring with something new.
"Give me the drive, Lena." Marcus's tone was almost kind. "No one else has to get hurt."
"I don't have it."
"Your laptop says otherwise." He nodded toward the bag slung across her back. The decryption was at 67%.
She dismounted, keeping the bag behind her. "You set me up. The defection—it was a frame."
Marcus's smile flickered. "Project Keystone needed a scapegoat. You were convenient."
"Convenient?" Her voice cracked. "I lost everything."
"You were a community organizer from the South Side. You had access to Ethan's records. You were perfect."
Darius stepped between them. "Marcus. Stop."
"Don't take that tone with me. I raised you." Marcus's eyes hardened. "I gave you purpose when you had nothing. And this is how you repay me?"
"You killed your own son."
The words hung in the cold air.
Marcus's face twitched. A crack in the mask. "Ethan was an accident. He wouldn't listen. He kept pushing, kept asking questions." His voice dropped. "I tried to reason with him."
"You interrogated him," Lena said, remembering the video. "You called him a liability."
"Because he was going to destroy everything! The Consortium maintains order. Without it, chaos. You think the world can handle the truth about how it really works?" Marcus's composure slipped. "I did what I had to."
Darius's hand found Lena's. Squeezed once.
"Project Keystone," she said. "What is it?"
"A clean slate." Marcus straightened his coat. "Every defector, every loose end, every witness—gone. We start fresh. No one knows about the Consortium except those who belong."
Lena's blood went cold. "How many?"
"Enough."
The decryption hit 100%.
Her laptop pinged.
Marcus's eyes flicked to the bag. "Take the drive from her."
The hunter raised his rifle.
"I'll give you one last chance, Darius." Marcus's voice turned gentle. "Come home. You're not like her. You belong with us."
Darius looked at Lena. At her trembling hands. At the bag holding the proof of Marcus's crimes.
"No."
Marcus sighed. "Pity."
He nodded to the hunter.
The rifle cracked.
Lena's leg exploded with white-hot fire. She screamed, collapsing off the bike. Pain ripped through her thigh, blinding, nauseating. Her vision swam with agony. She tried to stand, but her leg gave way, and she hit the ground hard.
"Darius—" She could barely breathe. Blood soaked through her jeans, warm and wet.
Darius was there, scooping her up. She cried out as he lifted her, the movement tearing fire through her wound. Her hands shook so badly she could barely grip his jacket.
"Get them in the van," Marcus ordered. "Alive."
The hunter lowered his rifle, reaching for a new magazine.
The van's driver stepped out to open the back doors.
One second of distraction.
Darius shoved Lena onto the motorcycle. Pain exploded again, black spots swimming across her vision. She gasped, clinging to the seat as he jumped on in front of her.
"Hold on."
He twisted the throttle. The bike shot forward—straight at Marcus.
Marcus dove aside. The hunter scrambled to raise his rifle, but the bike swerved, clipping the van's side mirror as they tore past.
"AFTER THEM!"
The city swallowed them. Streetlights blurred past. Behind them, tires screeched—headlights reflected in the rearview mirror, distant but gaining.
Lena pressed her forehead against Darius's back, her leg screaming with every bump. Blood soaked through her jeans, dripping onto the pavement. She could feel herself growing lightheaded.
"Don't pass out," Darius said. "Stay with me."
She forced her eyes open.
Her laptop bag had fallen open. The screen glowed.
A new message appeared.
*Decryption complete. Accessing file: PROJECT KEYSTONE - PHASE 2.*
Then another window opened. A video. Ethan's face appeared—younger, more tired, but alive.
"If you're reading this, I'm dead."
His voice was hollow.
"My father is building an army of sleeper agents. People who don't know they work for us. Programmed to activate on command."
Lena's breath caught.
"Project Keystone is just the beginning. He's planning something bigger. Something he calls *The Reset*."
The video froze.
The rearview mirror showed headlights growing larger.
Darius took a sharp turn, and they disappeared into the night—wounded, hunted, but still holding the truth.
