Vow of Ash

Chapter 5The Weave's Wound

The ritual chamber smelled of stone and blood.

Soren knelt on the worn floor, the Oracle's hands pressed against his temples. Her nails dug into his skin, and he felt something *pull*—a thread deep in his chest, connected to every pack bond he'd ever formed, every moment of belonging he'd ever stolen.

The thread snapped.

Pain lanced through him, white-hot and absolute. He opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came. Instead, images flooded his mind: Vesper's face as she condemned him, the Alpha's contempt, Thorne's blood staining the snow. Each betrayal played again, and he couldn't look away.

The Oracle's voice slithered through the torment. *"You carry them all. The wounds. The lies. The moments you sold yourself for survival. I am not taking your soul-scent, Soren. I am stripping away the mask you've worn since childhood."*

He tried to resist, but his body wouldn't obey. The Weave shimmered before him—not the warm, golden tapestry he'd sensed during pack rituals, but something fractured. Dark lines spiderwebbed across its surface, pulsing with corruption.

*"You see it now,"* the Oracle whispered. *"The Council's poison. Spread through every bond, every pack, every law they wrote."*

The vision sharpened, and Soren saw the source: a massive fortress, its foundations sunk deep into the earth. Beneath the Iron Throne, a chamber glowed with sickly light. And at its center, a figure chained to a stone altar—a shifter, but wrong. His veins pulsed with silver fire, and the Weave *bled* around him.

*"Kael,"* Soren breathed.

*"The first key. The only one who survived the original experiments intact. His blood can destabilize the Blood Origin, unravel what the Council built."*

The vision shattered. Soren collapsed forward, hands hitting the stone floor. The Oracle staggered back, her face gray, blood trickling from her nose.

"The location," he gasped. "Tell me."

"Beneath the Iron Throne." Her voice was barely a whisper. "The Council's seat. Their greatest secret, hidden in plain sight."

She swayed, and Soren caught her arm. "You said you'd give me the path."

"I have." Her smile was weak now, the sharp teeth stained red. "The path is through Kael. Find him, and you find the means to destroy them."

Her eyes went distant. Then she crumpled, and Soren felt the Weave shudder as her soul-scent faded into nothing.

She was dead.

---

Soren stumbled from the Weeping Stones, the world a cacophony of shimmering lines. Every tree, every rock, every blade of grass was threaded with the Weave's pulse. But now he saw the cracks—the places where the Council's corruption had seeped into the land itself.

He followed the trail back to camp, and the first thing he noticed was the silence.

No fire crackled. No voices argued.

Then he saw the blood.

Calla stood over Thorne, a knife in her hand, her face streaked with dirt and anger. Three bodies lay nearby—Shadows, their throats cut.

"What happened?" Soren's voice came out raw.

"Your new friends found us." Calla didn't lower the knife. "Draven led them. Said you'd sold us out to the Oracle for power."

"Did you believe him?"

She met his eyes, and he saw the doubt there. "I don't know what to believe anymore. You come back from that ritual, and you're *different*. I can feel it."

Thorne groaned, trying to sit up. His bandages were soaked through. "She's right. Your scent's gone. You're a ghost now, Soren."

"I paid the Oracle's price." He knelt beside Thorne, checking the wound. "And I got what we needed. The facility is beneath the Council's own fortress. And there's a shifter—Kael—who can destabilize the Blood Origin."

Calla's knife didn't waver. "And how do we find him?"

"He's chained beneath the Iron Throne. We have to break in."

"Impossible." Thorne coughed, blood flecking his lips. "That fortress is the most guarded place in the Hinterlands."

A rustle in the bushes made them all freeze. A Shadow scout emerged, breathless, his eyes wide with panic.

"Soren." The scout's voice cracked. "The Council knows. They've declared a Great Purge—all Shadows are to be executed on sight. And they've taken something from the archives. A journal."

Calla went pale. "My father's journal."

"The one with the map," Soren said, the words hollow.

The scout nodded. "They're already moving. Hunters are combing the eastern territories. You have hours, maybe less."

Soren stared at the Weave's dark lines, pulsing like veins of rot. The Council had anticipated him. They'd known the Oracle would speak. They'd already taken the one piece of evidence that could lead him to the experiment sites.

He was always one step behind.

But he wasn't finished yet.

"We find Kael first," he said, the decision forming like steel in his chest. "Then we take back the journal. We don't stop until the Council burns."

Calla finally lowered her knife. "And if we're too late?"

Soren looked at the horizon, where the Iron Throne's faint silhouette loomed against the dawn.

"Then we make sure they remember why shadows fear the dark."
