Shatterchain
Chapter 1The Unbinding
The smell of damp stone and rust woke Mira before the pain did.
She was curled on a cold floor, her skull pounding with the echo of a scream she couldn't remember making. The last thing she recalled was a gray office, a flickering fluorescent light, and the slow crawl of another Tuesday afternoon.
Then nothing.
Now here: a cage. Iron bars caked with something dark. A single torch sputtered on the far wall, casting shadows that moved like they had intentions of their own.
She pressed her palms against the ground and pushed herself up. Her wrists were bare. No Chain. No bracelet. No mark.
In the world she was beginning to remember—no, *know*—that meant she was nothing.
Footsteps.
A guard appeared on the other side of the bars, his face split by a scar that ran from temple to jaw, the flesh puckered and white. He jingled a ring of keys, studying her with the bored cruelty of a man who had done this a thousand times.
"Awake, are you? Good. The Chainkeeper wants you alive, but he didn't say *unbruised*."
Mira's throat was dry. Her voice came out cracked. "Where am I?"
"Dead if you cause trouble." He slid a key into the lock. "Now come quietly, and maybe—"
She didn't think. She just *reached*.
There was something in the shadows behind him. She hadn't noticed it before—a darkness that breathed, that *waited*. Her mind touched it like a hand brushing a live wire.
Pain, cold, and a voice that wasn't a voice:
*Yes.*
The lock exploded. The guard stumbled back, hand flying to his sword, but Mira was already moving. She slammed her shoulder into the door, burst through, and ran.
---
The alley was a maze of stacked crates and rotting refuse. She didn't know where she was going. Her legs moved on instinct, her heart hammering so loud she could barely hear the shouts behind her.
But she could hear *it*.
*Run. Faster. They'll catch you if you stop.*
The voice was in her head, smooth and female, with a cadence that made Mira's chest tighten. It sounded like her mother. The one who had died when Mira was twelve, whose face she could barely recall.
"Who are you?" she gasped, dodging around a corner.
*I'm what you reached for. What you needed. What you still need.*
Two guards appeared at the far end of the alley, blocking her path. She skidded to a halt. Behind her, the scarred guard was closing in.
*Trust me.*
"Trust you? I don't even know what you—"
*Then don't trust. Just act.*
The shadows around her feet twisted. They surged forward like living things, slamming into the crates beside the nearest guard. Wood splintered, barrels toppled, and the man went down with a cry.
Mira didn't wait. She spotted a rusted grate in the ground, pried it open with strength she didn't know she had, and dropped into darkness.
---
The sewer water was cold and shallow, reaching her ankles as she landed. She stood there, breathing hard, her hands trembling.
The voice was silent.
She looked at her wrist again. No Chain. No mark. In this world, that was impossible. Everyone had a Chain. It was the first thing a child learned: your Chain defines you. Fire, water, stone, wind—each one a gift from the Dominion, a measure of your worth.
She had none.
But she had *this*. This thing inside her head.
"Why can I hear you?" she whispered.
The shadows on the wall rippled.
*Because you called. And I answered.*
"That's not an answer."
*It's the only one I can give. You're Unchained, Mira. Born without a mark. There aren't many of you. Most die before their first year.*
She swallowed. "And bonding with you? What does that make me?"
A pause. The shadows seemed to pulse.
*A criminal. A heretic. A tool.* A pause. *A weapon.*
Before she could respond, the voice sharpened.
*He's coming.*
"Who?"
*The Chainkeeper. He can sense me. He's tracking us now.*
Footsteps echoed from the tunnel ahead. Slow. Deliberate. A single figure emerged from the gloom, his coat dark against the dim light, his boots splashing through the water.
He was tall, lean, with sharp features and hair the color of ash. His eyes were pale, almost gray, and they fixed on her with an intensity that made her skin crawl.
On his wrist, a Chain glowed faintly—a bracelet of interlocked silver links, pulsing with a soft, rhythmic light.
He stopped ten feet away.
"Unchained," he said. His voice was flat. "I was told you'd escaped. I didn't expect you to be so foolish."
Mira's hand clenched. "Who are you?"
"Caspian. Chainkeeper of the Seventh Ward." He took a step closer. "You've bonded with a Shade. Do you understand what that means?"
"I'm guessing you're about to tell me."
His jaw tightened. His Chain flickered.
It was subtle—a momentary dimming, a stutter in its glow. His hand twitched, as if in pain, and he pressed his fingers against his wrist.
*He's hiding something,* the Shade whispered. *His Chain is failing. He's sick.*
Mira's eyes narrowed. "You're sick."
His expression didn't change, but his hand stilled. "That's not your concern."
"You're a Chainkeeper. Aren't you supposed to be the picture of health?" She took a step back, feeling the wall behind her. "What happens when your Chain breaks? Do you die?"
Something flickered in his eyes. Fear. Anger. Resignation.
"You don't know what you've done," he said quietly. "Bonding with a Shade—it's not just forbidden. It's *dangerous*. That thing in your head isn't a friend. It's a parasite."
*He lies.*
Mira's heart pounded. "Then why did it save me?"
"It didn't. It used you." Caspian raised his hand, and his Chain flared brighter. "I'm going to give you one chance. Surrender. Let me contain the bond. It will hurt, but you'll live."
"And if I don't?"
His Chain flickered again. Longer this time. A grimace crossed his face before he smoothed it away.
"Then I'll have to *make* you."
The Shade's voice rose, urgent:
*Run. Now. He's stronger than he looks, but his Chain is weak. He can't pursue for long.*
Mira didn't hesitate. She turned and sprinted into the darkness, water splashing around her legs.
Behind her, Caspian cursed. She heard him take a step, then stop. A sharp intake of breath.
She kept running.
But before the tunnel swallowed the sound, she heard him mutter, low and cold:
"She's bonded. This changes everything."
---
The sewer stretched on, branching into tunnels that smelled of rot and rust. Mira didn't stop until her lungs burned and her legs threatened to give out.
She slumped against a damp wall, sliding down until she sat in the filthy water.
*He'll find you again,* the Shade said. *But I can help—if you let me.*
Mira closed her eyes. "Help me do what?"
*Survive. Grow strong. Learn the truth about this world.*
"And what truth is that?"
The shadows around her stirred. For a moment, she thought she saw a face forming in the darkness—a woman's face, familiar and strange all at once.
*The Chains aren't a gift,* the Shade whispered. *They're a cage. And I'm not the only one who wants to break them.*
Mira opened her eyes.
The face was gone. But a single word echoed in her mind, heavy with implication:
*Find me.*
Then the voice faded, leaving her alone in the dark.
She looked at her bare wrist, at the empty space where a Chain should have been.
And she began to walk.
